Storyline

The UN Secretary-General received a message from Ghassan Salame expressing his intention to leave his post as Special Representative for Libya, according to a spokesperson.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (02 Mar), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General “has always had full confidence in Mr. Salame’s work and the great efforts he has made to bring peace to Libya.” He said the two would be discussing “the way to ensure a smooth transition so as not lose any momentum on the gains that have been made.”

The UN spokesperson said Guterres told Salamé how much he appreciated all the work he has done at the helm of the mission “in very difficult, difficult times.”

Turning to the situation on the ground, Dujarric said UN chief Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the indiscriminate bombing of several parts of Tripoli over the weekend, including residential areas and the airport in Tripoli. He said, “The Secretary-General calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and recalls the recently adopted Security Council resolution 2510 (2020) and urges its implementation.”
