UN chief Antonio Guterres expressed his profound sadness at the passing of his predecessor, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, who he described as an accomplished statesman, a committed diplomat and a personal inspiration who left a profound impact on the United Nations and our world.
In a statement released on Wednesday night (04 Mar), Guterres said Pérez de Cuéllar, who was 100 years old, played a crucial role in a number of diplomatic successes — including the independence of Namibia, an end to the Iran-Iraq War, the release of American hostages held in Lebanon, the peace accord in Cambodia and, in his very last days in office, a historic peace agreement in El Salvador.
He extended his deepest condolences to the former Secretary-General's family, the Peruvian people and so many others around the world whose lives were touched by a remarkable and compassionate global leader who left our world a far better place.
Javier Pérez de Cuéllar served as the fifth United Nations Secretary-General from 1982-1991. He was the first and so far only Latin American Secretary-General.
Born in Lima in 1920, he reached the top UN office after 40 years as a diplomat for his country.
Secretary-General Pérez de Cuéllar engaged in peace negotiations all over the world including talks on the reunification of Cyprus, the 1988 cease-fire that ended the Iran-Iraq war, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan and assisted with Namibia’s transition to independence.
De Cuéllar also led mediation between the United Kingdom and Argentina on the dispute over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
Before being appointed Secretary-General, he served as the UN Special Representative in Cyprus and then Under Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs.
