Storyline

Four months after devastating floods that displaced more than 28,000 people in Bangui, many residents of the Central African capital are still affected.

On Saturday (07 Mar) MINUSCA staff went to meet the displaced and assess their situation.

Carole Baudoin, head of the Reform and Security Section at MINUSCA said, "It is for us an incredible symbol of solidarity and generosity that the staff of the MINUSCA national staff association made. They decided to assist the victims of the floods at the end of 2019. Today, we said let us try on our side, as international staff, to support these initiatives of the national staff of MINUSCA.”

MINUSCA personnel distributed clothes, shoes, salt, sardine tins, cassava, soap and a plastic bucket to the displaced

Christophe Kogbako, who is currently displaced, said, "We thank MINUSCA for the donation it gives us today. Before, we lived on Gbongoussoua Island. But with the rising waters, our homes are destroyed. Now we live on the site of the displaced. No one is helping us. This gesture that MINUSCA has just made appeals to us very much, and we are happy.”

Most of these residents lost everything after last October's floods caused by the overflowing of several rivers.

"After all the problems we've had, these donations are welcome. Today we're going to be able to eat our fill. We say a big thank you," explains Marie-Noëlle Gbolet, a displaced person.

MINUSCA staff said they would continue to distribute essential items to displaced people in other areas of Bangui, particularly affected by the floods.
