Sidi Ould Amin is a former refugee from Mali who returned home and started his own tailoring business. He is making use of the valuable skills he learned in a refugee camp in Burkina Faso where he received vocational training through a programme run by UNHCR with support from the European Union to help refugees become more self-reliant.
Sidi Ould Amin fled Mali in 2012 to Burkina Faso when conflict erupted. While in a refugee camp, he took part in a training program run by UNHCR, with the support of the European Union, learning tailoring and gaining skills that could help him become self-sufficient once again.
In 2017, he decided to return to Mopti and used what he had learnt to start his own business.
UNHCR gave him a cash grant through a programme supported by the European Union. His income from the business has helped him provide for his family and impact his community. He trains vulnerable young people unable to go to school, passing on his experiences and tailoring skills.
Persistent violence amongst armed groups and inter-communal clashes continue to affect northern Malians the countries around it. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee across borders. By February 2020, over 130,000 refugees had fled Mali. The displaced are hosted in Niger, Mauritania and Burkina Faso – countries that are also grappling with insecurity and staggering levels of displacement.
Despite enduring threat, some 70,000 Malians have chosen to return over time, to areas they felt were safe enough to go back to.
