2. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General:
“I want to tell that the Secretary-General strongly condemns any attacks on civilian populated areas. Last Thursday two civilians were reportedly killed and three injured in the shelling of a residential neighbourhood in Tripoli. He also condemns the shelling of the Mitiga International Airport that took place on May 9th. And that airport, as you know, is the only functioning airport in Tripoli, civilian airport that is. The strikes damaged passenger aircrafts, fuel storing facilities, firefighting trucks, the passenger lounge, and caused civilian casualties. The UN mission has renewed its call for a truce during the holy month of Ramadan to allow for an effective and coordinated response to the pandemic threat facing all Libyans. The Secretary-General urges the immediate halt of all military operations in order to deescalate the situation and prevent an all-out conflict. He emphasizes that there is no military solution to the Libyan conflict and calls on all parties to engage in immediate dialogue to reach a political solution. The Secretary-General’s Special-Representative in Libya stands ready to facilitate that dialogue. The UN mission will continue to document violations to be shared where relevant, the panel of experts and the International Criminal Court.”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today (11 May) “strongly” condemned recent attacks on civilian populated areas in Libya, including an attack last Thursday in which two civilians were reportedly killed and three injured in the shelling of a residential neighbourhood in Tripoli, as well as the shelling of the Mitiga International Airport on 9 May.

The spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, noted that that Mitiga is the only functioning civilian airport in Tripoli and said, “the strikes damaged passenger aircrafts, fuel storing facilities, firefighting trucks, the passenger lounge, and caused civilian casualties.”

Dujarric said the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) “has renewed its call for a truce during the holy month of Ramadan to allow for an effective and coordinated response to the pandemic threat facing all Libyans.”

He said “the Secretary-General urges the immediate halt of all military operations in order to deescalate the situation and prevent an all-out conflict. He emphasizes that there is no military solution to the Libyan conflict and calls on all parties to engage in immediate dialogue to reach a political solution.”

His Special-Representative in Libya, Stephanie Turco Williams, Dujarric said, “stands ready to facilitate that dialogue” and UNSMIL “will continue to document violations to be shared where relevant, the panel of experts and the International Criminal Court.”
