“Ramadan is an important moment t to show solidarity and support for people who are in need, as conflict worsens and curfew measures put in place to prevent the spread of covid-19, making it hard for people to find jobs to sustain their daily lives. This is the first emergency distribution the we’re carrying out during this month and we’re hoping to reach as many as 4000 refugees and asylum-seekers with help including food.”

"In this time our main problem is financial problem, we don't have anyone to transfer money for us or support us any other way. My husband used to work but he is no more working due to the COVID issues, my children are hungry. We used to pay 300 Libyan Dinars for house rent and now we don't have money to pay the house rent, we didn't pay the rent for the past two months and we have just started the third month, the owner of the house came yesterday and he was very angry, he told us we have to pay the money or leave, I beg him and told him I have no other place to go with my kids, he gave us five days to pay the rent or leave the house. God knows what may happen."

“I used to work as a day labourer, but now it's difficult because of coronavirus. I failed to secure work all of last month. We have sick people, our rent is due, and we can’t pay, even if you have phone and you walk in the streets it’s a threat.”

“These emergency distributions represent an important lifeline, for both refugees and displaced Libyans. The daily life has lately been very difficult for refugees and displaced Libyans because of the war, obviously, but now because of the coronavirus crisis and restrictions related to that, including restrictions of movement, it is becoming much worse. People are losing their work and are not able to cater to their needs any longer. So, in fact, the situation has never been harder for them.”

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has provided emergency assistance to thousands of refugees and asylum seekers in Tripoli, Libya, amidst deteriorating security conditions, as well as movement and other COVID-19 related restrictions.
The assistance package includes one month’s worth of food and hygiene kits, as well as purification tablets provided by UNICEF.
As other countries step up efforts to deal with coronavirus, Libya remains consumed by the ongoing bloody conflict, which has not eased up despite a coronavirus lockdown being put in place. Thousands of migrants and refugees are struggling to get by as work dries up and their overcrowded living conditions make social distancing a luxury.
As the month of Ramadan sets in, UNHCR is organising emergency distributions to help the most vulnerable people – an important moment to show solidarity as people are struggling with their daily needs. The distributions have been organized in co-ordination with local authorities and partners, LibAid and the International Rescue Committee.
