For his part, the Secretary-General is encouraged by the leaders overcoming more than two months of political impasse, finding a way forward based on compromise, dialogue and inclusivity. Holding a virtual press conference from New York on Monday (18 Mar), the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said "UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) welcomes the agreement reached between President Ashraf Ghani and Dr Abdullah Abdullah, to resolve the political impasse and enable the leaders to address the grave challenges facing the country.”

President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani and his rival Dr Abdullah Abdullah ended a two months-long political stalemate on Sunday (17 May) by signing a power-sharing deal. According to reports, the deal puts Dr Abdullah in charge of peace negotiations between the government and the Taliban.

In a statement, UNAMA acknowledged that both sides had to make compromises to reach this important agreement and hoped that the spirit of cooperation will continue, with all elements in government working together to strengthen progress in good governance, the rule of law, and anti-corruption, and to protect the rights of all citizens while continuing the advancement of Afghan women.

“For his part, the Secretary-General is encouraged by the leaders overcoming more than two months of political impasse,” said Dujarric. “It is his hope that the agreement between the President Ghani and Dr Abdoullah Abdoullah as Head of the new Council for National Reconciliation can enable progress towards intra-Afghan negotiations and a comprehensive peace agreement, as well as addressing the challenges in Covid-19 response and other developments and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan,” he added.
