Storyline

The second batch of election materials, some 32 tons of cargo consisting of 4,400 digital tablets and accessories, to be used for voter registration arrived on June 13 in capital Bangui, in preparation for the next general election in the Central African Republic (CAR).

Material was received on the tarmac at Bangui Mpoko airport by the Prime Minister, Firmin Ngrebada, surrounded by some members of the government and in the presence of the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Central African Republic, Denise Brown.

“The process is progressing very well,” said Ngrebada. “There has already been electoral mapping that has been fully completed, the establishment therefore of the ANE branches, throughout the national territory, the training of trainers who will, therefore, have to train the members of the various branches and the next step remains the registration and identification of voters.”

Preparations for these elections are ongoing, despite the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in the Central African Republic.

“I'm not saying it's easy, we had the arrival of a visitor who is COVID-19, but together with the government, the WHO, the Minister of Health, we are fighting the spread of the virus, and we are convinced that with the commitment and determination of the ANE government, with the support of MINUSCA, the UNDP and all the United Nations systems that we will get there as planned, ”explains Denise Brown, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in CAR.

The government has acquired these new materials with the support of several partners, in particular the European Union and the United Nations. Last May 40 tons of equipment consisting of voting booths and other electoral kits had already been delivered.
