Storyline

Volkan Bozkir of Turkey was elected President of the 75th session of the General Assembly today (17 Jun), while India, Ireland, Mexico, and Norway were elected members of the Security Council for a two-year term. 18 States were elected members of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a 3-year term.

The President of the General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, announced the results of the elections after member states separately cast their ballots.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the elections were held simultaneously in the General Assembly hall by secret ballot without a plenary meeting.

Announcing the result of the PGA election, Muhammad-Bande said, “having obtained the required majority of members present and voting and the greatest number of votes, His Excellency Mr. Volkan Bozkir of Turkey is elected President of the General Assembly at the 75th session.”

The President of the GA congratulate the elected members of the Security Council and said, “there still remains one seat to be filled among the Africa and Asia-Pacific states.”

A restricted ballot will be held tomorrow to determine the remaining seat to be filled for the African States, as Djibouti and Kenya have not acquired the required majority.

Muhammad-Bande announced that Argentina, Austria, Plurinational State of Bolivia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Japan, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Solomon Islands, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe have been elected members of the Economic and Social Council.

The 18 candidates for ECOSOC run unopposed.
