“International Organization for Migration said today that three Sudanese migrants were killed and two others injured in a shooting at the Khums disembarkation point last night in Libya, after being intercepted at sea and returned to shore by the coast guard. The shooting occurred after more than 70 people were disembarked from the vessel. Staff from IOM in Khums said that local authorities started shooting when the migrants attempted to escape from the disembarkation point. The injured migrants were transferred to local hospitals while survivors were moved to detention. The UN Refugee Agency, deplored the tragic loss of three lives and called for an urgent investigation following a shooting.”

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said today (28 Jul) that three Sudanese migrants were killed and two others injured in a shooting at the Khums disembarkation point Monday (27 Jul) night in Libya, after being intercepted at sea and returned to shore by the coast guard.

Briefing reporters via video link, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said, “the shooting occurred after more than 70 people were disembarked from the vessel, adding that “staff from IOM in Khums said that local authorities started shooting when the migrants attempted to escape from the disembarkation point. The injured migrants were transferred to local hospitals while survivors were moved to detention.”

Haq also added that the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) “deplored the tragic loss of three lives and called for an urgent investigation following a shooting.”
