The Spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Rupert Colville, today (7 Aug) said, “this week's horrific blast in Beirut has brought into sharp focus the need for the international community to step up and to help Lebanon and its people in this time of terrible crisis.”

Colville said, “only a swift and huge international response and sustained engagement will prevent many more lives being lost.”

He said, “every Lebanese is weighing how they will manage going forward after the triple tragedy of this socio-economic crisis, COVID-19, and the ammonium nitrate explosion.”

High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called for a swift international response and sustained engagement to prevent many more lives being lost.
