Storyline

Addressing the commemorative session of the UN General Assembly with a video message due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the President of France Emmanuel Macron said “given the medical emergency and climate challenges, given [human] rights violations, we need to act here and now, with those who wish to do so, those who are able to do so by harnessing possible avenues of cooperation.”

Quoting a French poet and dramatist Edmond Rostand, Macron said “it is at night that it is beautiful to believe in light.”

“I believe in multilateralism of action and not in one of rhetoric,” he said. “That is why I invite you in coming months to the Paris’ Forum of the World Conservation Congress, at the Generation Equality Forum and everywhere else where we can make a meaningful progress in advancing multilateralism.”

To mark the 75 years of its existence, the United Nations Organization held a High-level meeting featuring many world leaders and adopting a declaration to build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic and protect the planet by curbing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainable consumption and production patterns.

The theme of the event was “the future we want, the United Nations we need”, giving a strong focus on the role of youth, and ensuring the UN remains relevant for future generations.
