“The pandemic, indeed, calls us to seize this time of trial as a time of choosing, a time to choose what matters and what passes away, a time to separate what is necessary from what is not. It can represent a concrete opportunity for conversion, for transformation, for rethinking our way of life and our economic and social systems, which are widening the gap between rich and poor.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pope Francis, Sovereign, Holly See:
“The other path emphasizes self-sufficiency, nationalism, protectionism, individualism and isolation; it excludes the poor, the vulnerable and those dwelling on the peripheries of life. That path would certainly be detrimental to the whole community, causing self-inflicted wounds on everyone. It must not prevail.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pope Francis, Sovereign, Holly See:
“The current crisis offers an opportunity for the United Nations to help build a more fraternal and compassionate society. This includes reconsidering the role of economic and financial institutions, like that of Bretton-Woods, which must respond to the rapidly growing inequality between the super-rich and the permanently poor.”

Storyline

In a video message, Pope Francis today (25 Sep) told the General Assembly’s General Debate that the COVID-19 pandemic can be a time “for rethinking our way of life and our economic and social systems, which are widening the gap between rich and poor.”

Francis said the pandemic “calls us to seize this time of trial as a time of choosing, a time to choose what matters and what passes away, a time to separate what is necessary from what is not.”

The other path, he said, “emphasizes self-sufficiency, nationalism, protectionism, individualism and isolation; it excludes the poor, the vulnerable and those dwelling on the peripheries of life.”

That path, he added, “would certainly be detrimental to the whole community, causing self-inflicted wounds on everyone. It must not prevail.”

The Head of the Catholic Church said, “the current crisis offers an opportunity for the United Nations to help build a more fraternal and compassionate society. This includes reconsidering the role of economic and financial institutions, like that of Bretton-Woods, which must respond to the rapidly growing inequality between the super-rich and the permanently poor.”

Pope Francis’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
