Storyline

In a video message, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan today (25 Sep) said that he is ready to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “without any conditions,” adding that “establishing a constructive relationship between Japan and North Korea will not only serve the interests of both sides but will also greatly contribute to regional peace and stability.”

The Japanese Prime Minister said, “Japan seeks to normalize its relationship with North Korea, in accordance with the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration through comprehensively resolving the outstanding issues of concern such as the abductions, nuclear and missile issues, as well as settlement of the unfortunate past.”

He reiterated that he will “miss no opportunity to take actions with all my dedication.”

Prime Minister Suga’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.

Suga became Prime Minister of Japan this month after Shinzo Abe stepped down due to health concerns.
