The organization of credible elections in Mali “depends on political, institutional, electoral and administrative reforms,” the top UN official in Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif told the Security Council on Thursday (8 Oct).
Speaking at a first formal meeting to take place in the Security Council Chamber since the start of COVID-19 pandemic, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Mali reported on the situation in the country following the 18 August coup d’état, which lead to forming of a 25-member transitional government including several military officers.
“I like to point out to the Council that it is for the first time since the signing of the Agreement in June 2015 that the signatory movements have made their official entry into a Government of the Republic of Mali,” he said. “This breakthrough is full of symbols and meaning.”
The transitional government committed to a 18 months-long mandate until the new leadership will be decided at elections.
“The organization of credible elections that can lead to a return to constitutional order depends on political, institutional, electoral and administrative reforms as set out in the Transition Charter,” Annadif said.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Malian ambassador Issa Konfourou said “our national authorities remain determined to respect all the national and international commitments to which Mali has freely subscribed, in accordance with the principle of continuity of the state.”
“In this regard, I would like here, and without any ambiguity, to reiterate the determination of the authorities of the Transition to continue, relentlessly, the diligent implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali,” he insisted.
The 18 August coup d’état was Mali’s second coup in eight years.
