Storyline

Former members of the Central African Republic’s PK5 self-defence groups symbolically handed over their weapons in the presence of the Minister of Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration and Repatriation (DDRR), during a launching ceremony for the fourth phase of the Community Violence Reduction (CVR), programme, Thursday (22 Oct) in Bangui.

PK5 spokesperson Mohamed Rahama said, "we are now stopping the firing of weapons. We believe in it. We want peace to return to the Central African Republic.”

The Minister-in-Charge of DDRR, Maxime Mokom, said, “we are all delighted today to see our brothers and sisters of PK 5 taking the initiative to come voluntarily to hand over their arms and thus definitively turn the page on community-based violence.”

A total of 14 weapons of war, a homemade weapon, four rockets and shells, and 104 ammunitions, were symbolically handed over by the 14 former self-defence groups of Pk5 and members of the community of the 3rd arrondissement.

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) Chief of DDRR, Pierre Emmanuel Ubalijoro, said, “I am delighted with this symbolic deposit of arms today. It shows that there is really a dedication to go towards peace in the community of PK 5. And on behalf of the MINUSCA, of the hierarchy of MINUSCA, I congratulate you and encourage you to move forward.”

MINUSCA, through its program to reduce community violence, known as CVR, supported the Central African government in the pacification of PK5, a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood of Bangui, long subjected to the action of armed groups that present themselves under the name of self-defence groups.
