Storyline

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the African Union Peace and Security Commissioner, Ambassador Smail Chergui, and the Chairman of the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States Ambassador Gilberto da Piedade Veríssimo, arrived in Bangui on Tuesday (Oct 27) for a four-day visit to the Central African Republic.

"First, it is a solidarity visit with our colleagues from MINUSCA who are on the ground during these times of COVID. So, it's to say thank you and give them our encouragement. Secondly, it is to see the implementation of the agreement of peace of national reconciliation. And third, to see together how we can build a better preparation for the upcoming elections", explained Ambassador Smail Chergui.

This high-level joint visit takes place 8 months after the signing of the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation and two months before the general elections in the Central African Republic.

During its stay in CAR, the high-level delegation will be received in audience by the President of the Republic and the President of the National Assembly. It will have a working meeting with the Prime Minister and the Government. The delegation will also meet political parties, civil society, the religious platform, women leaders, and signatories, facilitators, and guarantors of the Peace Agreement, and diplomats stationed in Bangui.
