Only during the month of September, the Court was able to hold two hearings remotely. And before that, another hearing was also held remotely by the Court.”

“COVID-19 has disrupted this old tradition of in person meetings and in person hearings. But the Court was able to react quickly in order to continue to discharge its functions under the Charter of the United Nations. We did so by putting into place relevant technology to hold remote meetings and hearings.”

“We believe that Bolivia did its best to present its argument as indicated. And it did present an excellent argument. But the law is what it is, and the Court of course ruled that Chile did not assume an obligation through the correspondence, through the statements, that were presented before the Court by Bolivia to give access to Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean.”

The President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Judge Abdulqawi A. Yusuf, today (30 Oct) told reporters that the Court “has been able to maintain this year its judicial output at the same level as in previous years despite the difficult circumstances” brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yusuf said “COVID-19 has disrupted this old tradition of in person meetings and in person hearings. But the Court was able to react quickly in order to continue to discharge its functions under the Charter of the United Nations. We did so by putting into place relevant technology to hold remote meetings and hearings.”
Asked about the Court’s October 2018 decision on the case between Chile and Bolivia, the Court’s President said, “we believe that Bolivia did its best to present its argument as indicated. And it did present an excellent argument. But the law is what it is, and the Court of course ruled that Chile did not assume an obligation through the correspondence, through the statements, that were presented before the Court by Bolivia to give access to Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean.”
There are currently 15 cases pending before the Court. During the month of September, the Court held two hearings via teleconference.
