5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
"The UNFCCC also co-joined by Chile, Italy, the UK and France published a statement on the matter saying that there is no greater responsibility than protecting the planet and people from the threat of climate change and reiterated that the Paris Agreement provides the right framework to reduce the impacts of global warming. They noted with regret the withdrawal of the US. For the Secretary-General, I think as he has stated in the past – even just I think just last week - there is a growing coalition of nations committed to achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century which is obviously the key objective of Paris. I mean we saw the announcement by Japan, by the Republic of Korea among [others]. The Secretary-General will co-convene on December 12 a climate ambition summit which will coincide with the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. And so, our support, our belief in the need for a strong and active Paris Agreement remains unchanged, and I think I would refer you back to what the Secretary-General said back in November a year ago about the US decision."

Storyline

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat, along with Chile, Italy, the United Kingdom and France, issued a statement in which they regretted the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, according to a UN spokesperson.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (04 Nov), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the statement noted that there is “no greater responsibility than protecting the planet and people from the threat of climate change and reiterated that the Paris Agreement provides the right framework to reduce the impacts of global warming.”

For the Secretary-General’s part, Dujarric refered to a statement in which he said that there was “a growing coalition of nations committed to achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century which is obviously the key objective” of the Paris Agreement. He said Guterres would co-convene on December 12 a “climate ambition summit which will coincide with the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement.”

The UN spokesperson underscored that the UN’s support and belief in the need for a “strong and active Paris Agreement remains unchanged.”

The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
