Storyline

A new bridge build by a contingent of United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was handed over to the local authorities in Bangassou, a city in the south-east of the country.

The city of Bangassou is opening up a little more to the surrounding populations with the creation of a new bridge. The bridge built by the Pakistani contingent of MINUSCA is 24 kilometre from Bangassou. It was officially handed over to the authorities on 5 November 2020.

"This Yongo-Fongo bridge, which was a critical passage for the population for a very long time, is now becoming a reality because this bridge is indeed there. We have just visited it. And we also see the enthusiasm of the people of this locality, "said the Force Commander of MINUSCA, General Sidiki Traoré.

This new bridge is one step to improve the road infrastructure between Bangassou, Rafaï, and Zemio. Two metal bridges have already been built on this road from Zemio to Rafaï, and two more will be built up to Zemio soon.

"The bridge is quite an important tool that facilitates the movement of people. It is also quite an important tool to enable us to implement MINUSCA's mandate, which is focused on protecting civilians. It is thanks to this bridge, to this tool, that we can be able to reach several villages in the sub-prefecture of Rafaï and Bangassou to patrol and be present to support the population", explained Louis-Pierre. Roosevelt, head of the Minusca office in Bangassou.

Carried out less than two months before the elections, the rehabilitation of road infrastructure in Mbomou prefecture by MINUSCA will facilitate the electoral process.

"You will agree with me that the road remains a very influential factor in the development of a country. All the more so, since soon we will begin to receive within our walls the various candidates for the presidential and legislative elections who will travel through our villages, our municipalities, for their campaign. It is appropriate here to say thank you and to perpetuate this collaboration", declared Pierrette Benguere, prefect of Bangassou.

Located 734 km from the capital, Bangassou is a landlocked city that benefits from the Oubangui River to trade with neighbouring Congo and the riparian regions.

It took an average of a month until recently to drive from Bangui to Obo, even further east. This period could soon be reduced to one week.
