UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi appealed for funds to help Sudan meet the needs of over 43,000 refugees fleeing Ethiopia’s Tigray region and called for an end to the ongoing crisis.
Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, visited Sudan as the country shelters a growing number of refugees from Ethiopia.
Since the start of fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region in early November, more than 43,000 refugees have crossed into Sudan seeking protection and shelter. Even before this influx the country was hosting nearly one million refugees, mainly from South Sudan.
Grandi reviewed UNHCR operations in support of the government-led response to the latest influx.
Commending Sudan for receiving 500 - 600 refugees that are “coming into the country per day,” Grandi appealed for “150 million for the next six months to help the government of Sudan manage this refugee crisis.”
He also met with refugees like 31-year-old Berhane, a geography teacher who arrived in Sudan five days ago. Berhane’s family fled Tigray when attacks reached their home near Humera. His wife, who had lost her job as a teacher after schools closed due to COVID19 and was away visiting family, was left behind when they fled. His daughter is optimistic but misses her mother. Berhane reassures her but cannot know for sure if his wife is safe. Their grandmother, Kiros who travelled with them is still visibly shaken as she recounts the chaos that followed the bombings.
Aid is being mobilized to help refugees almost half of whom are children. Humanitarian agencies are providing shelter and other facilities, but more resources are required and Sudan needs international support urgently.
UNHCR has helped relocate nearly 10,000 refugees to the Um Rakuba site, 70 km further from the border inside Sudan, as work continues to put up shelters and improve services. Family tracing services have been established and these have already reunited many separated refugees.
