“The members of the Security Council received a briefing from USG for peace operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on the increasing tension in the Central African Republic. The members of the Security Council condemns in the strongest terms in the violation of the peace agreement, and violence perpetrated by armed groups and other militia. The members of the Security Council called on all actors to urgently cease hostile actions, and work towards ensuring conditions conducive to the holding of the upcoming elections. The members of the Security Council considered that the elections must be held on 27th December, in full respect of the constitutional timelines and condemn all attempts to conduct the CAR to new political transition violating the CAR constitution. The members of the Security Council recalled that only inclusive, fair, free and transparent credible peaceful elections undisturbed by disinformation and other forms of manipulation of information can bring lasting stability to CAR, and that their preparations should be made in accordance with the constitution of CAR and the decisions of the constitutional court. The members of the Security Council reiterated their support to SRSG Ndiaye and MINUSCA mandate including to turn all dialogues among all political stakeholder in an inclusive manner and mitigate tension for the electoral period and commend MINUSCA’s effort to implement its mandate through priority and robust posture. The members of the Security Council also emphasize the role of guarantors and facilitators for peace agreements, including AU, ACAS and neighboring countries.”

In a statement, UN Security Council condemned “in the strongest terms in the violation of the peace agreement, and violence perpetrated by armed groups and other militia” in Central African Republic.

Reading a statement issued by the Security Council today (21 Dec), South African Ambassador Jerry Matthews Matjila who is serving as the President of the Council for the month said, “the members of the Security Council called on all actors to urgently cease hostile actions, and work towards ensuring conditions conducive in holding of the upcoming elections.”

Ambassador Matjila continued, “the members of the Security Council considered that the elections must be held on 27th December, in full respect of the constitutional lines and condemn all attempts to conduct the CAR to new political transition violating the CAR constitution.”

The President of Council also said, “the members of the Security Council recalled that only inclusive, fair, free and transparent credible peaceful elections undisturbed by disinformation and other forms of manipulation of information can bring lasting stability to CAR, and that their preparations should be made in accordance with the constitution of CAR and the decisions of the constitutional court.”
