“The international community believes that the elections must take place on 27 December” in the Central African Republic (CAR) and it “condemns the attempts by the alliance of armed groups and some political stakeholders to prevent the country from moving through a new political transition,” a top UN official in the country told reporters in a virtual press briefing on Tuesday (22 Dec).
Over the weekend, the UN peacekeeping mission in CAR (MINUSCA) reported that a “coalition of armed groups” carried out simultaneous attacks and attempted to reach the capital Bangui as political and security tensions increased ahead of the country’s elections.
On Sunday, MINUSCA and the members of the G-5 group consisting of the main international partners in the CAR issued a communique condemning the incidents and calling on stakeholders to stop the violence. They also expressed their support to holding of the elections as scheduled.
Speaking to reporters in New York via videolink, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central African Republic, and Head of the MINUSCA Mankeur Ndiaye said “the MINUSCA maintains a robust presence with a total and impartial engagement of the Blue Helmets and in cooperation with the Central African Defense Forces in order to allow voters to go out and vote freely and safely.”
He also said that “all electoral material for the presidential and legislative elections has been delivered to the regions where the local departments of the national electoral authorities are located and this was with the assistance of the MINUSCA in order to finalize the last preparations, notably the distribution of voting cards.”
