3. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General:
“Our colleagues at the UN peacekeeping mission there today denied press reports that were claiming that the town of Bambari had fallen and remained under the control of the UPC armed group. The UN mission says that the UN peacekeepers are patrolling the streets and that the situation is under control. MINUSCA, the peacekeeping mission launched operations yesterday to expel the UPC combatants and reached a full control of the town following an attack by combatants against these Central African gendarmerie forces. And also in a statement issued today, the Central African Republic’s country’s specific configuration of the peacebuilding commission issued statement strongly condemning the recent attacks on civilians, peacekeepers and humanitarian workers, as well as the violation of the political agreement. These grave incidents risk reversing hard won gain achieved by the country in recent years, a few days before the holding of the first round of the legislated presidential elections scheduled for Sunday. And the UN human rights office also today said they were deeply alarmed by the reports of escalating violence in CAR just a few days before the election. The violence stoke by political grievances and hate speech have resulted the forced displacement of civilians, including the neighboring countries.”
