UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “warmly welcomed President Biden’s steps to re-enter the Paris Agreement on climate change,” the UN spokesperson told reporters in New York on Thursday (21 Jan).

On his first day in office on 20 January this year, the President of the United States Joseph Biden signed an executive order to recommit its country to the global agreement aimed at curbing the rise of global temperature to under 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The United States under President Obama was one of 196 country that accept the agreement in December 2015, only to rescind its signature in 2017, by President Trump.

“We look forward to the leadership of the United States and accelerating global efforts towards net zero, including bringing forward the new nationally determined contributions with ambitious 2030 targets and climate financing in advance of cop 26 in Glasgow, this year,” Dujarric said.

The Paris Agreement on climate change will enter into force for the US on 19 February 2021.
