“Starting from scratch here was difficult but pleasant because here people are very cool. If they have
to take out a plate of food to share it with you, they do it and that has been very nice. Here we all help
each other. We all have problems and we all have needs, but still we all help each other."

In a mission to highlight lifesaving support for Venezuelans in Colombia, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited an informal settlement on Sunday (7 Feb) housing refugees from Venezuela, as well as displaced.
Brisas del Norte is an informal settlement located in Riohacha, La Guajira. It hosts refugees, migrants and Colombian returnees, from Venezuela, as well as Wayúu indigenous communities and Colombians victims of the internal conflict. There are 1,220 inhabitants grouped in 318 families, 60 per cent of them are refugees and migrants.
Due to its informal status, the community doesn’t have permanent access to water, electricity or sanitation systems. UNHCR
supports the community through access to rights, capacity building, delivery of non-food items, infrastructure, legalization, and land titling processes, among others.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, visited Brisas del Norte on Sunday and met Gibel, who arrived in Colombia, from Venezuela, in 2018. Since moving to the settlement, she met and fell in love with Vicente, a Colombian national who was internally displaced twice due to the country’s domestic conflict.
Colombia is host to 1.7 million Venezuelans, more than 37 per cent of the 4.6 million refugees and migrants from Venezuelan who are present in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than half of Colombia’s Venezuelan population lack regular status, affecting their ability to access essential services, protection and assistance.
