Press Briefing by Spokesperson for Secretary-General
The Secretary-General is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of President Idriss Déby Itno of Chad this morning. He expresses his deepest condolences to President Déby Itno's family, as well as to the people and the Government of Chad.
In Chad, the situation is characterized by growing humanitarian needs linked to the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin, as well as the effects of climate change. The UN, along with its partners, is continuing operations in the country to assist impacted communities.
Earlier this morning, the Secretary-General participated virtually in a meeting of the Libya Quartet, which brings together the UN, the African Union, the European Union and the League of Arab States.
In Yemen, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs today said that intensified fighting continues across frontline areas in Ma’rib Governorate, leading to large waves of displacement since early February.
