“On India, you will have seen that the Secretary-General tweeted that he and the UN family stand in solidarity with the people of the country as they face a horrific COVID-19 outbreak. The Secretary-General said the UN stands ready to step up our support; and the Resident Coordinator in India, Renata Lok Dessallien, shares the Secretary-General’s sentiments. For its part, UNICEF has sent critical supplies, including 3,000 oxygen concentrators, diagnostic tests, medical kits, and other equipment to India. Doctor Yasmin Haque, the UNICEF Representative in India, said much more is needed as the outbreak continues to spread rapidly. The Agency is helping to procure and instal oxygen plants where hospitals in the northeast and in Maharashtra, as well as the installation of thermo-scanners at ports of entry countrywide. UNICEF has also been helping the government to ensure that ensuring critical services for the most vulnerable children can continue functioning, as well as to help more that 12 million children in 17 states continue learning from home.”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed solidarity with the people of India as they face a “horrific COVID-19 outbreak,” and said the UN “stands ready" to step up support,” UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said today (30 Apr).

Haq, briefing reporters from New York, said the UN Children’s Agency, UNICEF, “has sent critical supplies, including 3,000 oxygen concentrators, diagnostic tests, medical kits, and other equipment to India.”

The Agency, he said, “is helping to procure and instal oxygen plants where hospitals in the northeast and in Maharashtra, as well as the installation of thermo-scanners at ports of entry countrywide,” and has also “been helping the government to ensure that ensuring critical services for the most vulnerable children can continue functioning, as well as to help more that 12 million children in 17 states continue learning from home.”

The number of new infections in India is tipping over 300,000 per day and more than 200,000 have died from the infection, although many there believe the figure could be a lot higher.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is helping India to scale-up additional hospital beds by procuring mobile field hospitals which could be set up in the most affected areas. The field hospitals have a capacity of 20 to 30 beds but can be increased to a maximum of 50, if needed.

India this week completed a 100-day COVID-19 vaccination drive, with 145 million doses administered.
