Storyline

"We need our partners," said CAR’s President Faustin Touadera following the meeting with a joint delegation from the African Union (AU), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), United Nations and European Union.

The high-level delegation is in Bangui for a four-day visit to the Central African Republic (CAR) to meet with the Central African Head of State Faustin Touadéra and the president of the national assembly Mathieu Sarandji, among others.

The main topic of the discussions with the country’s President was “whether their presence here is desired by the Central African government, because following many demonstrations, they were wondering whether the invitations that had been extended to them are still valid,” said Touadera.

“We were reassured that the president of the republic reaffirmed that the work of the international community, our work is still valid and necessary for peace and stability of the Central African Union,” Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union told the press after the meeting.

For his part, Jean Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations reiterated « the commitment of the United Nations, of our colleagues in the field, of our organizations to accompany your efforts for the democratization process, for the pacification of the CAR, for the development efforts which are also important, for the efforts aimed at responding to a humanitarian situation which is difficult and which moreover requires that all the organizations be able to operate freely and in complete security on the ground.”
The visit comes as the 2020-2021 CAR election cycle comes to a close. The delegation will also meet with civil society, women, youth, religious and political party representatives and diplomats in Bangui as well as hold talks with the custodians of the CAR political agreement for peace (APPR).
