“The figure that we have calculated for 2020 regarding refugees, displaced people, asylum seekers or people under U.N. mandate, in other words, has risen again for the ninth consecutive year. If you recall, last year when we issued our Global Trends statistics, the figure was 79.5 million. And this year the figure is going to be 82.4 million people. So, an increase of three million. I think this is very significant because we're talking about 2020. We're talking about the year of covid-19, the year where we didn't move, where we were confined, locked down. Yet, in spite of that, there are three million people more that have been compelled to flee because of war, because of discrimination, because of persecution and other forms of violence.”

“Twenty-six million are refugees. So, people that have crossed borders and sought refuge in another country. This figure has been slightly increased from last year and it includes Palestinian refugees under the UNRWA mandate. The big jump, the big jump concerns the figure of internally displaced people, people that are refugees, in other words, in their own country. And this figure is now nearing 50 million, an unprecedented number.”

“In 10 years, from 2011 to 2021, the number of people forcibly displaced around the world has doubled. We're now in excess of one percent of humanity being forcibly displaced. And one of the many figures that to me is quite interestingly striking is that 42 percent of these people are children.”

This displacement is becoming increasingly complex because people on the move, makes people on the move for the reasons that I've mentioned, mix with others, people moving because of the impact of the climate emergency. “Eighty-two point four million is the population of Germany. I think it is big, but it is manageable with goodwill, with some organization and some resources, it is manageable. The rhetoric that we have heard from many governments that refugees and migrants are bad people and the only way to deal with them is to build a wall or push them back at sea is not only is morally abysmal and unacceptable, it is also profoundly useless because in any case, these movements will continue until we address the root causes and therefore we have not only a moral duty, but a practical necessity to manage this in a good way.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people fleeing wars, violence, persecution and human rights violations in 2020 rose to nearly 82.4 million people, according to UNHCR’s latest annual Global Trends report released on Friday (18 Jun).. This is a further four per cent increase on top of the already record-high 79.5 million at the end of 2019.
“The figure that we have calculated for 2020 regarding refugees, displaced people, asylum seekers or people under U.N. mandate, in other words, has risen again for the ninth consecutive year,” the High Commissioner for Refugees Phillipo Grandi said. ““In 10 years, from 2011 to 2021, the number of people forcibly displaced around the world has doubled. We're now in excess of one percent of humanity being forcibly displaced. And one of the many figures that to me is quite interestingly striking is that 42 percent of these people are children.”
The report shows that by the end of 2020 there were 20.7 million refugees under UNHCR mandate, 5.7 million Palestine refugees and 3.9 million Venezuelans displaced abroad. Another 48 million people were internally displaced (IDPs) within their own countries. A further 4.1 million were asylum-seekers. These numbers indicate that despite the pandemic and calls for a global ceasefire, conflict continued to chase people from their homes.
