“This is an extremely important time here in Honduras. The arrival of 1.5 million vaccines through COVAX with the generosity of the United States. We are very excited here because it’s not just another vaccine delivery, for it provides Honduras with the opportunity to vaccinate over a half million people completely. And this is also the time to make it very clear that this isn’t just vaccine equity, it’s vaccine justice. So, any country with excess vaccines, now is the time to donate. There are countries like Honduras and neighbours around the region that don’t have enough right now.”

Storyline

UNICEF welcomed the first United States Government donation of 1.5 million COVID-19 vaccines via COVAX’s dose-sharing mechanism, arriving Sunday (27 Jun) in Honduras, and called for more largescale vaccine donations, in particular to hard-hit Latin America and the Caribbean.

UNICEF Representative in Honduras, Mark Connolly, welcomed the donation at Armando Escalón Espinal Air Base, in San Pedro Sula Airport.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Connolly, Representative in Honduras, UNICEF:
“This is an extremely important time here in Honduras. The arrival of 1.5 million vaccines through COVAX with the generosity of the United States. We are very excited here because it’s not just another vaccine delivery, for it provides Honduras with the opportunity to vaccinate over a half million people completely. There are countries like Honduras and neighbours around the region that don’t have enough right now.”

With only less than 62,000 Hondurans reportedly fully vaccinated Honduras has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Latin America.
