Mihret Gerezgiher is a 25-year-old Ethiopian refugee living in Tunaydbah settlement in eastern Sudan. She fled home after conflict began in Ethiopia’s Tigray region in November 2020, when the fighting started, leaving with nothing but the clothes on her back.
Memories of the atrocities she witnessed are still fresh.
Mihret hid in the bush for four days and walked for long distances to Sudan. She witnessed horrific violence and is struggling to cope with the memories of the war.
An engineer, Mihret has lost her career and livelihood yet she remains optimistic.
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians crossed the border to Sudan. They have been relocated to refugee settlements where UNHCR and partners are providing basic services. More support and funding is urgently needed to assist refugees like Mihret heal from the trauma they have experienced and rebuild their lives.
Millions of people have been displaced within Ethiopia’s Tigray region since conflict began in November 2020.
