“We are pleased to announce that the Security Council has come together to unanimously adopt a resolution that allows for an extension of the Bab al-Hawa crossing for 12 months. This is the first time since 2016, that a united Security Council has acted on its humanitarian responsibilities in relation to Syria in this way. So I repeat – it is a good day. This 12 months renewal allows predictability, this is critical to the brave humanitarian actors who work in extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances to assist those who are in grave need in Syria. Of course, like very political agreement, we continue to believe we could have done more, that more should be done, and we will continue to work to ensure that humanitarian needs in Syria remain in focus.”

The Security Council today (9 Jul) unanimously adopted a resolution that allows for an extension of the Bab al-Hawa crossing for 12 months, “this is the first time since 2016, that a united Security Council has acted on its humanitarian responsibilities in relation to Syria in this way,” said the Irish Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason.

Ireland and Norway are the co-penholders on Syria’s humanitarian file. Speaking to reporters after the Security Council meeting, the Irish Ambassador said, “This 12 months renewal allows predictability, this is critical to the brave humanitarian actors who work in extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances to assist those who are in grave need in Syria.”

She continued, “Of course, like very political agreement, we continue to believe that we could have done more, that more should be done, and we will continue to work to ensure that humanitarian needs in Syria remain in focus.”

The resolution calls on Member States to respond with practical steps to address the urgent needs of the Syrian people, in light of the profound socio-economic and humanitarian impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Syria, as a country in situation of complex humanitarian emergency.
