“UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet is calling on Cuban authorities to promptly release all those who have been detained for exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, or freedom of opinion and expression. It is particularly worrying that these include individuals allegedly held incommunicado and people whose whereabouts are unknown. We are also very concerned at the alleged use of excessive force against demonstrators in Cuba and deeply regret the death of one protester in Havana. It is important that there be an independent, transparent, effective investigation, and that those responsible are held accountable. The protests in Cuba take place in the context of a difficult economic situation. We urge the Government to address the protesters’ grievances through dialogue. The High Commissioner has also reiterated her call for the lifting of unilateral sectoral sanctions, given their negative impact on human rights.”

High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet today (16 Jul) called on Cuban authorities “to promptly release all those who have been detained for exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, or freedom of opinion and expression.”

In a statement read by spokesperson Liz Throssell, the High Commissioner said it was “particularly worrying that these include individuals allegedly held incommunicado and people whose whereabouts are unknown.”

The Office also expressed concern “at the alleged use of excessive force against demonstrators in Cuba and deeply regret the death of one protester in Havana.”

Throssell said it was important “that there be an independent, transparent, effective investigation, and that those responsible are held accountable” and urged the Government “to address the protesters’ grievances through dialogue.”
