Mare Nostrum
A fishing fleet returning to a little Algerian port after the night's catch. Shoppers looking for their dinner in the Vieux Port of Marseilles. A group of people collecting tar balls at a beach in Malta. What do these diverse groups have in common? They share a growing concern for the health of the sea around which they live Like many others in the nations bordering the Mediterranean, their livelihood, their food, their recreation is bound up in this sea which lies at the meeting point between the industrial and developing worlds.
Under the aegis of the long-term Mediterranean Action Plan, laboratories all around the Mediterranean are collecting samples of both water and fish with which they can compare results. The film takes us to a number of these laboratories and out onto the sea itself. For it is only through scientific collection and analysis that the hard facts may be learned in order to plan future environmental activity. The hope is that man's future rendez-vous with the Mediterranean may be as beneficial to the sea as it has been to mankind.
