“We are following the situation in Tunisia very closely since the announcement by President Saied yesterday. We call on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, refrain from violence, and ensure that the situation remains calm. All disputes and disagreements should be resolved through dialogue.”

“We are hoping that the situation will remain calm, and we are trying to see to it that all the various parties on the ground do what they can to ensure that the situation does remain calm. Obviously, as you just noted yourself, the region is a very volatile one and it’s certainly a region that cannot bear to have more unrest than it has presently had.”

“You know, we are dismayed by these reports, and we hope that all reporters, including the ones at Al Jazeera, will be able to go about their work without harassment. And we want to make sure that as we have the situation on the ground in Tunisia, that press freedoms are respected.”

United Nations spokesperson Farhan Haq today (26 Jun) told journalists in New York that the UN is following the situation in Tunisia “very closely” after yesterday’s announcement by President Kais Saied of the suspension of parliament and the dismissal of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.
Haq called “on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, refrain from violence, and ensure that the situation remains calm.”
The spokesperson said, “we are hoping that the situation will remain calm, and we are trying to see to it that all the various parties on the ground do what they can to ensure that the situation does remain calm,” adding that “the region is a very volatile one and it’s certainly a region that cannot bear to have more unrest than it has presently had.”
Asked about reports of a police raid at Al Jazeera’s headquarters in Tunis, Haq said, “we hope that all reporters, including the ones at Al Jazeera, will be able to go about their work without harassment. And we want to make sure that as we have the situation on the ground in Tunisia, that press freedoms are respected.”
