United Nations spokesperson Farhan Haq today (26 Jun) told journalists in New York that the UN is following the situation in Tunisia “very closely” after yesterday’s announcement by President Kais Saied of the suspension of parliament and the dismissal of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.

Haq called “on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, refrain from violence, and ensure that the situation remains calm.”

The spokesperson said, “we are hoping that the situation will remain calm, and we are trying to see to it that all the various parties on the ground do what they can to ensure that the situation does remain calm,” adding that “the region is a very volatile one and it’s certainly a region that cannot bear to have more unrest than it has presently had.”
