Treasure Within

The pre-Colombian civilizations of South America developed consummate skills in architecture, in goldwork, in pottery and textiles. The Spanish colonial period brought cities, cathedrals, and a tradition of painting and sculpture that developed independently from its European origins. The cultural heritage of South America is unique and rich, and is threatened by the very forces of industrialization and modernization that must be encouraged for economic growth. In the belief that human progress has meaning only when it embraces the deeper values of life, the nations of Latin America have begun a common effort, in collaboration with UNESCO and UNDP, to preserve and revitalize their heritage from the past.
