“What we have seen is an earthquake of course, the tragic consequences, lives lost property damaged and some of them very insecure. The dispersed nature of the earthquake is also a huge challenge. But I think what we have been really very excited to see is that all the work that has gone in with the UN and the governments of Haiti is bearing fruit and Haiti is taking the leadership. The government, civil society, defining how it is they want to be helped and accompanied to recover in a much better way than they have done before.”

On a two-day mission to Haiti, the UN deputy chief said on Friday that she was struck by the resilience of the Haitian people, who had mobilized quickly to support their neighbours in the aftermath of last week’s massive earthquake and subsequent tropical storm.
Accompanied by the UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed flew to Haiti on Thursday evening to express the UN’s unwavering support to the Haitian people following the earthquake that devastated the country a week ago.
The number of affected people continues to climb in the aftermath of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti’s southern peninsula on 14 August. More than 2,100 people have been reported killed, and 10,000 others injured so far.
The quake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace, which caused flooding in the quake-affected areas. According to authorities, an estimated 600,000 people need humanitarian assistance.
During her mission, Mohammed and Steiner met with affected communities in the earthquake-damaged city of Les Cayes. Starting with a silent prayer at the rubble of the Hotel Le Manguier, the delegation then visited the Immaculate Conception Hospital, where Mohammed spoke with staff and patients.
Later in capital Port-au-Prince, at a press conference, Deputy Secretary-General said “we saw once again, the incredible resilience of the Haitian people who have suffered so much and are now mobilized to support their neighbors, and communities in the aftermath of the earthquake.”
“This is a moment that we believe that Haitian people come together, we saw an enormous amount of unity in the response to the earthquake. And so we believe that this can be turned into an opportunity for building back better,” Mohammed said.
Praising the help offered by the United Nations and other international partners, the prime minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry said that “the situation remains of concern in affected zones,” and that his government is doing everything it can to assist affected population.
“The remaining work is immense,” Henry said.
Achim Steiner, the UNDP Administrator said that the entire UN system in Haiti is “at the moment engaged in supporting the government’s efforts with emergency supplies and emergency medical teams that are arriving, are here and will arrive in following days.”
The delegation also toured the Haitian National Emergency Operations Center, known as COUN and earlier on Thursday (19 Aug) Mohammed and Steinermet with Prime Minister and other government officials, the UN Country Team, as well as with members of civil society.
