“The conditions in the camp are of course fragile as in any humanitarian situation but they have improved. We've seen education services, food distributions, healthcare and other facilities that are offered to the refugees. In the other camp Tuneydbah which is quite far from here, conditions are a bit more precarious. We're now looking for other locations, but we need to make sure that wherever we put an overflow of more refugees is sustainable from all points of view.”

So as a strong partner with UNHCR and I know we will strengthen that partnership, also when we see that the humanitarian crisis is just increasing.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi together with the Norwegian Minister of International Development, Dag-Inge Ulstein visited Um Rakuba camp eastern Sudan where Ethiopian refugees who have fled violence in the Tigray region are being hosted.
Grandi called for peace in Ethiopia through negotiation and political talks to end the fighting that began in November 2020 and has displaced hundreds of thousands inside the country and forced nearly 48,000 people to flee to Sudan.
Ulstein said he was impressed by the resilience among the displaced and the work done by humanitarian partners.
Many refugees said they would return home if peace and security prevailed.
UNHCR and partners continue to support the Sudan government to provide Ethiopian refugees with life-saving assistance and access to services including shelter, food, water, sanitation, health and education. More resources are needed to support those displaced.
