Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said his country remains "committed to reaching, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, balanced, and legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam,” with the aim of “ensuring the survival of 150 million people in Egypt and Sudan and to avoid causing irreparable damage to the peoples of both countries.”

In a pre-recorded message presented today (21 Sep) at the UN General Assembly, Al Sisi said Egypt, which respects the developmental rights of its neighbors, is considered one of the driest countries in the world. He said the Nile River is the country’s only lifeline throughout history, which explains the grave concerns of Egyptians with regards to the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Al Sisi said a decade of negotiations between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia did not reach a solution to the situation as a result of an inexcusable refusal to deal with the issue positively and choosing a policy of unilateralism and imposing new realities on the ground which threatens the peace and stability of the entire region.

He said the Egyptian stance is based “not only on the values of fairness and rationality, but also on firm international legal grounds, which enshrine the principle of the just and fair use of joint water resources in international river basins.”

The Egyptian President emphasized the importance of multilateralism to deal with the crises faced by the world today.
