7. SOUNDBITE (English) Alok Sharma, COP26 President:
“Throughout my presidency, I have championed the position of the climate-vulnerable countries, the developing nations, and I have called for the G20 to play their part. Ultimately, this is a group of nations that represents 80 percent of global emissions, and therefore whilst we all must play our part, they can make, or indeed break the hope of keeping 1.5 within reach.”

Following a series of reports and studies warning that urgent action is needed to keep the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global average temperature increases to 1.5C within reach, the United Nations Climate Change Conference opened today (31 Oct) with the key aims of raising ambition on all fronts and finalizing the agreement’s implementation guidelines.
Speaking to reporters, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), stated: “We know that this transformation can happen. That there are tools, there are instruments, there are solutions. It is a question of time.”
COP26 President Alok Sharma said he is “cautiously optimistic” about progress from the G20 Summit in Rome, but it remained to be seen where discussions and negotiations ended up as he knew “they had not been easy.” Patricia Espinosa expressed her optimism for talks in Glasgow, as she recognized a “unity of purpose.”
