Storyline

In a historic declaration at COP26, global leaders including Xi Jinping, Joe Biden and Jair Bolsonaro today (2 Nov) signed the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forest and Land Use, committing countries to halt and reverse global deforestation over the next decade as part of a multibillion-dollar package to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

UK Prime Minister and COP26 co-host Boris Johnson unveiled the agreement at the Action on Forests and Land Use event Tuesday morning, where attendees included US president Joe Biden, Democratic Republic of the Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, President of Gabon Ali Bongo Ondimba and President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

Prime Minister Johnson underscored the urgent need to protect the planet’s forests, “these cathedrals of nature”, adding that “they are essential to our very survival.”

US President Joe Biden highlighted the contribution of the US to the urgent needs of forest conservation, declaring that through the new plan, the United States “will help the world deliver on our shared goal of halting natural forest loss and restoring at least an additional 200 million hectares of forest and other ecosystems by the year 2030.”

Congratulating the attending leaders on the dais Presidents Biden, Tshishekedi, and Bongo Ondimba on their commitments, he added that he was delighted to announce at the summit that the “world is coming together around their effort- your effort- with at least 1.5 billion dollars over the next five years to help protect the forest peatlands and precious ecosystems of Central Africa.”
