“I think it’s a great moment that young people are showing that we are a mass movement of people that want to see change. Because right now the world leaders are not doing what needs to be done to protect our future and to also keep the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement alive of 1.5. So we are out here to keep up the pressure and remind them that people are suffering and dying from the climate crisis, and there’s no time to keep postponing action. This is the time that the leaders need to step up and do what must be done.”

Storyline

On COP26’s Youth Day today (05 Nov) in Glasgow, thousands of people, including many striking school children, took to the city’s streets to demand action on climate change. Stark calls for climate justice were heard in speeches and chants as the congregation reached George Square.

Once there, they amplified their messages to world leaders. Kenyan youth climate activist Elizabeth Wathuti declared: “We are out here to keep up the pressure. There’s no time to keep postponing action. This is the time that leaders must step up and do what needs to be done.”

Over at the Blue Zone in the COP26 SEC venue, leading climate campaigner and former Vice President Al Gore emphasized the need for leaders to deliver on their pledges. If net zero is reached, when it is reached, “we will then be able to say to the young people who are out in the streets of Glasgow, and have been out in the streets of cities all over the world, every Friday and other days besides, demanding that we legitimize their expectations for a future that is worthy of them: “we can do so.”
