“This comes a day after security forces in Yangon mowed down protesters in a truck, and followed with the use of live ammunition against unarmed, peaceful protesters. We call on the authorities to immediately release all those who have been arbitrarily detained, some 10,000 political prisoners. We also understand that some 175 of these individuals have already died in detention due to ill treatment and torture.”

The conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi will only deepen the rejection of the military's rule.” said an OHCHR spokesperson.

Ravina Shamdasani, Spokesperson for the UN human rights office said today (06 Dec), “this comes a day after security forces in Yangon mowed down protesters in a truck, and followed with the use of live ammunition against unarmed, peaceful protesters.”

OHCHR called on the authorities to “immediately release all those who have been arbitrarily detained, some 10,000 political prisoners.”
