"We are on a precipice – but we have the power to pull back from the brink. It is not too late to make the right decisions, particularly for those who are being left behind. The well-being of people around the world, the health of our planet, and the survival of future generations depend on our willingness to come together around a commitment to collective problem-solving and action.”

These Summits will align global financial decision-making around the 2030 Agenda and tackle questions of financing for sustainable growth, poverty reduction and resilience – key aims not just of SDG 17 on partnerships, but of all the SDGs that require increased investment, and of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.”

Put simply: the United Nations must step up; we must become more responsive and more effective for the people we serve.”

Storyline

Addressing the first system-wide meeting dedicated to galvanizing action towards implementing Our Common Agenda, launched last year, Secretary-General António Guterres today (10 Feb) told the General Assembly that "we are on a precipice – but we have the power to pull back from the brink.”

The Secretary-General said it was “not too late to make the right decisions, particularly for those who are being left behind. But we don’t have a moment to lose.”

With only eight years until 2030, and with COVID-19 driving the world further off track, the UN chief said that the report’s recommendations aim to get the world back on track towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said, “Our Common Agenda is aimed at addressing this crisis head on, so that we can turbocharge the implementation of Agenda 2030, rescue the SDGs and get them back on track before it is too late. It calls for a New Global Deal to ensure that power, wealth and opportunities are shared more broadly and fairly at the international level.”

Our Common Agenda proposes an intergovernmental World Social Summit in 2025 to coordinate action and create momentum on a global scale towards reaching the goals, while taking stock of efforts to renew the social contract.

At the centre of this New Global Deal, he said, “is my call for Biennial Summits between the G20, the Economic and Social Council, and the heads of International Financing Institutions, at the level of Head of State and government, strengthening the role of the United Nations as the main pillar of the multilateral system.”

These Summits, Guterres continued, “will align global financial decision-making around the 2030 Agenda and tackle questions of financing for sustainable growth, poverty reduction and resilience – key aims not just of SDG 17 on partnerships, but of all the SDGs that require increased investment, and of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.”

The UN chief highlighted three issues that require urgent action, including education systems, gender equality, and youth engagement.

In his opening remarks, General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid said his priorities included a sustainable recovery from the pandemic, human rights of all, protecting the planet, and revitalizing the UN.

Shahid said, “Ours is a world in need of hope. Hope that can only be inspired by unity, solidarity, and collective action. Our 8 billion constituents demand to see the evidence that we hear their cries, that we understand their pain, that we share their grief, and that we are resolved to deliver.”

Put simply, he said, “the United Nations must step up; we must become more responsive and more effective for the people we serve.”

He called on Member States to go into the consultative process in good faith, with mutual trust and respect, and with the common goal of enhancing our work and bettering the world around us.
