1. Various shots, participants in the hall
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Vedad Imsirovic, Gender Affairs Officer, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“We started these workshops last year and their aim is actually to bring experiences from other countries here to our local counterparts in South Sudan. So, basically, we have gathered several soldiers from UNMISS Force and in the next three days they will present their countries, present their armies and share their experiences focusing on gender equality and response to gender-based violence.”
3. Various shots, delegates in the hall
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Vedad Imsirovic, Gender Affairs Officer, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“Many perpetrators do come from the security sector; many of them wear uniforms and that’s why we have these targeted workshops where we are speaking about gender equality and response to gender-based violence. The idea is that they will go further and whatever they have learned here today, these officers will also relay to their colleagues in the field. So, the overall aim is to reduce gender-based violence committed by people in uniforms.”
5. Various shots, soldiers in the hall
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier Abouch Baak, Medical Director, Tiger Division, South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF):

7. Various shots, people attending workshop
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Vedad Imsirovic, Gender Affairs Officer, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) held a three-day workshop in the country’s capital, Juba, to address ongoing violence against women and lack of female personnel in the security sector.

So, basically, we have gathered several soldiers from UNMISS Force and in the next three days they will present their countries, present their armies and share their experiences focusing on gender equality and response to gender-based violence.”

Gender-based violence has continued to be a major factor across South Sudan, preventing women and young girls from fully enjoying their rights and freedoms.

The sessions brought together uniformed personnel from the South Sudanese military.

SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier Abouch Baak, Medical Director, Tiger Division, South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF):
“For this workshop we are getting a lot of benefit from it because before, the girls in uniform were very, very troubled but now they are confident, they know their rights, they know what they are doing, and they know where to go.”

In the past, similar workshops have been held with the country’s police service.

“Last year, in September, we held a similar workshop with the SSNPS, the local police. So, now this workshop is focusing on SSPDF, and this is just the second in a series of workshops where we will go through all security sector institutions and have similar workshops like this one.”

The workshop aimed to raise awareness among both civilian populations, as well as law enforcement personnel tasked with protecting them on the safeguards available for women who have survived any form of sexually motivated violence.
