The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said South Sudan remains Africa’s largest refugee crisis, with 65 percent of the total refugee population being children and appealed for 1.2 billion USD to deliver humanitarian assistance and protection to 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees and host communities.
UNHCR and partners are seeking the funds to to deliver life-saving assistance, protection and solutions to 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda. In nearly a decade of conflict, South Sudan continues to grapple with sporadic violence, chronic food insecurity and the impact of major flooding and climate events, forcing millions of people to flee their homes in search of assistance.
Despite dwindling resources as well as the impact of COVID-19, countries have kept their doors open to host millions of South Sudanese refugees. With the needed funds, the DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda will be supported in their efforts to provide protection, enable South Sudanese refugees to access basic services and boost their resilience.
In line with the Global Compact on Refugees, UNHCR and partners called on the international community to show solidarity and support for host countries by addressing the chronic underfunding of humanitarian operations and supporting solutions.
