Storyline

The Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, led a field mission Saturday (28 Aug) to Adediang and Malakal, Upper Nile State, where thousands of people displaced due to the recent fighting in Tonga.

Heavy fighting between armed factions erupted mid-August in Tonga town and neighbouring areas in Panyikang County, Upper Nile State, and forced vulnerable population predominantly women and children to flee in different directions leaving their belongings behind.

The delegation engaged with local authorities, the host community and the newly displaced people. Affected women, youth and the elderly shared their stories of fleeing though the night and being separated from their families and children. Humanitarian partners have mobilized available resources and teams to respond to people’s emergency needs and are working across sectors to provide the much-needed support for shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, protection, health, food and nutrition.
