“The agreement remains valid. The only thing is that it was in some way partially voided of substance through decisions of the American administration in 2018. That was to begin with, and then secondly, Iran in seeing that decided to withdraw from its own obligations on the nuclear side. So, what we need to see is all sides, fully implementing their obligations under the JCPOA once again and under resolution 2231.”

The United Nations has mobilized the IAEA which we very strongly support has ultimately been able to get access to the nuclear power plant. Mr. Grossi himself, went there with a team and I think he's already maybe left he's made public statements, and it's very important that the IAEA be able to fully carry out its mandate in Ukraine on the subject of nuclear power plants.”

Following a report by the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR), French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière today (1 Sep) said the situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, “is a source of profound concern.”

Presenting the programme of work of the Security Council for the month of September, de Rivière said, “we hope to see change there. We have taken note of the diagnosis and the advice of Madame Bachelet, and I think that we will look at it closely with our partners.”

Asked whether this issue will be brought up at the Council, he said, “the Security Council has quite a specific mandate which is to maintain regional and international peace and security. And a number of Council members believe that domestic internal situations do not fall under its purview. Secondly, crimes against humanity are indeed something that should be fully condemned, but that falls under international justice rather than the Security Council.”

Asked about reports on an imminent agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the French Ambassador said, “the agreement remains valid.
