3. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS):
“As the political stalemate continues, the human rights situation has also not improved. Since my last briefing here, 20 protesters were killed and at least 1,700 injured. I have more than once deemed it necessary to publicly condemn the excessive use of force by security forces as well as their targeting of health facilities and medical staff.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS):
“Humanitarian needs are now at record levels due to a combined impact of ongoing political instability, economic crisis, and rise in intercommunal violence, poor harvests, and now floods. 11.7 million people are facing acute hunger, and this number is growing.”

9 SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS):
“Nearly a year after the military takeover of 25 October, Sudan still lacks a fully functional and legitimate government. The decision of the military to withdraw from politics and the recent initiatives by civilian forces offer a window of opportunity for both the military and political forces to reach an agreement on the way forward. Time is of the essence, however: the longer political paralysis lasts, the more difficult it will become to return to the transition which UNITAMS is mandated to assist.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations:
“What I can confirm if that the political process is ongoing. The dialogue will not stop. At the end of the day, all parties will give precedence to the interests of Sudan, its security, its stability, and its transition towards the desired civilian democratic rule.”

The head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, said that the longer the political paralysis will last in the country, “the more difficult it will become to return to the transition which UNITAMS is mandated to assist.”
Addressing the Security Council today (13 Sep) on the situation in Sudan, Perthes noted that as the political stalemate continues, the human rights situation has also not improved.
He said, “Since my last briefing here, 20 protesters were killed, and at least 1,700 injured.”
Perthes stressed, “I have more than once deemed it necessary to publicly condemn the excessive use of force by security forces as well as their targeting of health facilities and medical staff.”
He added that particularly worrisome is the surge of violence in Darfur and the Blue Nile, where “From 8 August 2022, UNITAMS documented 40 incidents of intercommunal violence resulting in the death of more than 300 civilians.”
UNITAMS Chief also said that the humanitarian needs are now at record levels due to ongoing political instability, economic crisis, rise in intercommunal violence, poor harvests, and floods.
He said, “11.7 million people are facing acute hunger, and this number is growing.”
Perthes also noted that while the United Nations and partner organizations reached 7.1 million people in need since January this year, the 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan is only funded at 32 percent.
He concluded, “Nearly a year after the military takeover of 25 October, Sudan still lacks a fully functional and legitimate government. The decision of the military to withdraw from politics and the recent initiatives by civilian forces offer a window of opportunity for both the military and political forces to reach an agreement on the way forward. Time is of the essence, however.”
Also briefing the Security Council, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, said, “What I can confirm if that the political process is ongoing. The dialogue will not stop. At the end of the day, all parties will give precedence to the interests of Sudan, its security, its stability, and its transition towards the desired civilian democratic rule.”
